Kat from Hong Kong

These are a selection of images that I took of Kat, a feisty gentleman I have know for a number of years.  So I was rather surprised that he offered to pose nude in front of the camera, as he never posed with a straight face when taking group selfies. I think of Kat as somewhat as a rebel. A graphic designer by trade, our conversations always revolved around art, self-expression and men. One of our favorite gripes was how conservative Hong Kong guys are when it comes to nudity. That, I will leave for another post.

Photographed in August 2019.

Ken T: first shoot with digital camera Nikon D70

Year: 2004
Nikon D70, F3.5-4.5 18-35mm and F2.8 28-70mm

These photographs of Ken T were taken with my first digital camera, the D70. The resolution was not very high and it could only deliver jpgs. It was much later that RAW files were introduced to the market. My trust in getting good images with digital were low at the time. However with some careful manipulation in Lightroom, I was able to extract something semi-decent from the files. Since these have been on a CD since 2004, they have held up quite well. I have since converted the jpgs into dng files for safekeeping.

In photographing Ken T, I was really focused on his eyes, and what they were saying. A quiet introverted kind of guy. I never quite knew if he was really there, or if he was ignoring me. The shoot went well and his posing was somewhat static. He knew his body well being that he was a fitness instructor, but his face would lead you to believe he was somewhat unsure of himself. It is my own take on it.

He left Hong Kong for the USA shortly afterwards. And we have not been in touch with each other. It is like that for many of the models I shoot.

Caesar Chang by Norm Yip for G Magazine (2004)

“Dreamy mixed-Asian model Caesar Chang photographed by Norm Yip in 2004 for shirtless fashion accessory editorial for G Magazine HK.”

G Magazine was spear-headed by the publishers of HK Magazine. I met up with Stephen, owner of the successful tabloid who told me of his interest in starting up a gay-friendly magazine and showed me a mockup of G Magazine in its development stage. This orchestrated meeting was probably or partly instrumental to my interest in graphic layout and publishing. I had not published anything at the time.

This shoot with Caesar was one of several editorials. I’ll have to dig them up later to see what I had done back them. Recounting the memories of the shoot, I just remembered thinking how exceptionally beautiful and attractive he was. If not for a team of guys helping out, I might have tried to take advantage of him. It is honestly very difficult to work in these conditions where an ideal type is walking around the studio and taking your artistic direction.

So tell me what do you think of Caesar? Like? No like? As this is the first post on Patreon, let me know your thoughts and please, try to be civilized.

KEN T

Year: 2004
Nikon D70, F3.5-4.5 18-35mm; Nikon F100, F2.8 28-70mm using Kodak TMax 400

The most noticeable feature of KenT is no doubt his penetrating eyes. The single-eyelid is seen by many as unattractive by Asian women, opting to have double eyelid surgery to look more open or receptive to others. Regardless, it was the one feature that attracted me to KenT brought me to photograph him. Several of the above photographs appear in The Asian Male – 2.AM. I am delighted to show the overall selection of images that have been sitting in the archives for many years.

The Asian Male 3.AM postcard design is underway…

postcard-gif-design1

Today I started to work on the postcard design that are a part of The Asian Male 3.AM campaign. They will be simple, measuring 8.25 x 5.5″ (21 x 14cm) and printed on 300gsm woodfree card. I am going to send the above design for a test, to see if the printing and color look good. I won’t be going for glossy postcards, as I feel these images are best suited for matte finish. They may even be good enough to frame.

Below is a mockup of how they should look like. These photographs gives you an idea of the size, a bit larger than your average sized postcard, which in most cases are around 4 x 6″. These will have a substantial feel to them.

So to anyone that pre-ordered a copy of the book, you will be getting 3 postcards as part of the campaign.
