I remember seeing photographs of Yusuke many years ago, admiring his abs-perfect physique on a social media channel and chatting him up. It was not easy since he seemed to be shy about showing his face in the photos he posted. Photo after photo of his teasing abs and chest but no face! Of course, this enticed me to get to know him more. Eventually, though, he gave way and revealed his face. He said he knows his strong point, but I encouraged him that he was good looking. It’s good to know that not everyone is super vain or a narcissist. I was delighted to meet him in person and we conducted the shoot in my Chai Wan studio. This was 2012. The shoot was for my 3rd book The Asian Male – 3.AM. I chose what I thought were the best images according to my sense of aesthetics, and for what my eye was seeking. So what we have here is a kind of remastering and rediscovery of what I had in the archives, overlooked by me, and are added to a few of my original selection back in 2012. I hope you like them.

I met Ian the first time many years ago, but cannot remember the exact details. We exchanged ideas of him being photographed, but never acted on it. Then his work took him to other cities and places within Asia, and I sort of left it at that. Then Covid hit, and he returned to Hong Kong. So I asked if he was still keen on being photographed by me. To my delight, he said he would, and added that he has always dreamed of being one of my models. So here I present a selection of photographs available as fine art limited edition prints.

I met Kelvin on one of the few boat trips this year, a young 25 year old lad with positive energy and smiling attitude. Youthful and approachable, we sort of hit it off when de-boarding the boat. After exchanging contacts and few Whatsapp exchanges we decided to do a shoot, just to see if we had any chemistry as model and photographer. It turned out we did, but moreso after in the second shoot we did, where he eagerly posed nude for the camera. Here are the best images from the set. All images here are specially selected by me, and retouched to my personal aesthetic of colour and composition.

I met Rango nearly a year ago on Instagram shortly after my exhibitions in Bangkok and New York. He possessed a very lean-fit body, a type that I very much attracted to photographing. As some of you may know, I am not drawn to very large built men with bulging muscles that have become the ideal type that guys are after these days.

JESS MOON SEO is a professional life model in Korea. I knew he understood his body well and could create shapes and forms that the average guy or yoga guru would not know how to do. I know this from having organised life drawing workshops myself in the past. Professional life models, although maybe not as flexible as a dancer, can do poses that look good to the viewer. It’s about form, shape, and angles. There is much to be said about a professional life model than one believes.

In the selection of photographs that I have chosen, they are not be overly intellectualized. They offer no political view, no intent to push gender roles, no message of masculinity or femininity. The intent is simply to showcase an exceptionally beautiful man who has learned to showcase his body and face in a short time of several hours. We had no preconceived idea of what we were doing to do but to let instinct and spontaneity be our guide.

MODEL COMMISSION
To support Jess 15%, of the sale price will go to him. He is an artist that makes a modest living from posing for others. In this shoot, no payment was made to him and likewise none to me. I myself support myself through my own artistic endeavors.
