This photography session of HANRY was taken in 2009 when I was working on a book and fashion project with Patryk Chaou to support an AIDS charity in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, the project never took of the ground and the images remained in in storage. For some reason, I came back to these photographs and realized that there were many superb images in the entire session, and believe these should be showcased. Hanry is an independent costume and set designer for theatrical productions. He is filled with exuberance and creative wild-like energy, and a joy to photograph. To support Hanry and his goal an an artist himself, 15% of the sale price will go to him. In this shoot, no payment was made to him and likewise none to me. I myself support myself through my own artistic endeavors.

A common friend introduced Jun to me. When we met, I felt there was a connection, a realness to his personality that I liked. He was geniune. I have met some guys that I can tell immediately are fakes, inside and outside. Jun however possessed a kind of brooding aura that I drawn to, which is always good for a photography shoot. He exuded both sensuality, sexual appeal, and a hint of insecurity in his personality.

He asked politely if it was okay for him to smoke. I obliged and I photographed him as he was preparing the paper and leaves. For someone that likes to smoke, it immediately calms the person down; they are home. I could feel his body relax into the nicotine. Don’t drill me or those on how it damages the body, life leads to death anyway.

Some people ask me how I resist the the temptation of such men . Well, to be frightfully honest, when I am working, I am serious about what I do, and if there is more than a mind connection, during the shoot is not the place for making advances. But here’s the other side of the coin: Many times I do not want to have anything to do with the model. I finish the shoot, the guy gets dressed, we sign the model release and you’re out the door. Work accomplished!

Jun Li is the director of the recently acclaimed movie Tracey, a story of a man who comes out as a transgender woman.

If the first photography session explored nudity in the semi-public domain, then this takes us back into the private domain of Norm Yip’s intimate studio in Chai Wan’s industrial neighborhood. The series of images is a collection of images documenting the process of how he photographs men, from simple portraits to nudity.

Minimal props include a thin white-T, water and an assuming antique mirror which lay the ground for eroticism within an unrehearsed brief. There is an intensity from William Lo (羅曉峰), who makes direct contact with the camera lens that both reveals and conceals his inner desires.

The fierce nature of William’s self-confidence in his own body and its attributes are clear. He knows his body and angle well. The last segment of the shoot employs an antique mirror as a backdrop. It is worn over the years, making an ideal foil to William and his brooding haughtiness.

15% of the sale price will go to William. In this shoot, no payment was made to him and likewise none to me. I myself support myself through my own artistic endeavors.

“Norm Yip features William Lo, actor to the recent movie Thirty Years of Adonis by director Scud. Dressed in a blue Japanese shirt and white fundoshi, William finds refuge in an old Hong Kong industrial building; it is barren and foreboding. The images are spontaneous, raw and erotically charged. The most intense images belong to the rooftop, where the sudden onset of rain forces both William and Norm to react quickly. This is an exploration of nudity in the semi-public domain.”

The images shown here were originally taken in 2009. Performance artist Zihan, fashion stylist Patryk Chaou and I were out one night drinking and dancing at Taboo, a local gay disco in Singapore. Suddenly from nowhere, Zihan exclaimed “I want to be photographed now”. He must be joking me. It must have been 3am by then, but he was serious. We gathered ourselves and walked over to the hotel to grab my camera and set out into the dark night street of Singapore and wandered into an operational yet deserted parking lot. There was literally no one around. While I unpacked and set up my camera, Patrick was already styling Zihan, who was already shed off his clothes. He was clearly ready to be photographed. What happened next is somewhat is a blur, as I recall the seriousness that came from the shoot. Zihan was in a zone of intense anger or internal struggle and I was just there to document the feelings he was projecting.
