I am not one of those photographers that romanticize the days of film – manually developing black and white rolls and printing in the darkroom is something I am not going to miss. That said, I still own several film cameras, including a Nikon F100, Mamiya 645 and even a medium format Sinar. While looking through my back catalogue of images when compiling this collection, I recalled a photography session with Derek that was taken shortly after I set up my Chai Wan studio. When I finally located the images, I was surprised to discover that they were photographed using a film I rarely used – the ILFORD’s XP2 Super. Although not a true black and white film since it a chromogenic emulsion, the XP2 outputs in black and white versus color. Based on these photographs taken of Derek, it has nearly all the merits of my favourite black and white film, the Kodak T-MAX400. What also makes this particular photography session particularly memorable to me is the fact that he was my first model to agree to a full frontal shoot. All the models previous to him were too shy or conservative to reveal themselves to the camera in such a way. Quite honestly, I too was hesitant about doing the shoot as I was at that point wary of the potential repercussions from the public. After all, it is all too easy in Hong Kong to be irreversibly – if unfairly – labelled. All in all, I am glad that this session happened and am very happy to be able to share these gorgeous images here.” – from The Asian Male 3.AM book, available on Amazon.com

In 2013, Yamai enquired about being photographed nude. Months had passed and I never heard from him for the longest time. I thought it was not going to happen, as many guys get cold feet and I never hear from them again. I never push anyone into being photographed nude; they have to do it on their own accord. It is not just the body that needs to be ready for the shoot, but the mind! Even if they have the greatest body with a ripped 6-pack abdominal or large defined chest, a mind that is not ready to be photographed nude will result in a sterile photograph with no depth or feeling.

So it was to my surprise and pleasure that I received a message from Yamai several months ago that he was going to book me for a session, and was flying in from Taiwan for the shoot. (Incidentally, he is the first Taiwanese guy I have ever photographed.) Yamai’s body is defined, but not overly big to the point of being disproportionate. He is over 180cm tall, which doesn’t show in most of his social media photographs.

He cautioned me that this was going to be his first time being photographed professionally, but feeling both excited and unsure of what to do in front of the camera. The results proved to be beyond both of our expectations, so much so that I asked if he would allow me to post these onto my website.

What you see here are selected photographs from images that he selected from an original set of 1130 photographs.

Some of the best images taken of Patrick, a Hong Kong guy that I met a few years ago. Rather soft-spoken in person, he possessed one of the most well-proportioned bodies I have photographed. I have a large print of his framed in my studio. His skin is utterly flawless and smooth. Some of the images that I have included here appear in Beaux V1 – Vanity issue and also in The Asian Male – 3.AM, both available on Amazon.

Photographed in 2009 for a book project that never transpired (and that ultimately got me highly depressed), for some reason I have come back to this while looking through the multitude of shoots I did years ago with fashion stylist Patryk Chaou. In a hotel room in Singapore with about 6 people looking onwards during this shoot, amateur models Gus and David were enlisted to do the honors of posing for this evocative couples shoot. With me rather excited by both these stunning boys, I directed the shoot with the idea of a Steven Klein feeling but in broad daylight. Could it be done? I didn’t really know. One of the photographs from this series made it’s way to my current book ‘The Asian Male – 3.AM‘. To the amazing models Gus and David, I cannot thank you enough for participating in this shoot, as you guys make it sizzle!
