DAVID
Portrait photography was something that I never thought I would get a hang of, but through accidental approaches in shooting. I have always found the human body and face very fascinating to photograph, and the psychological expectations of the individuals that I meet. Some people are very aware of themselves as they sit or stand in front of me. And they ask me what I want from them, and they act out. That’s not what I want when I shoot a portrait. I am not interested in what I want in them. I am interested in what they have inside, and may offer to share to the viewer. It is the a sense of vulnerability in the photograph. I teach this to my students. I don’t know David at all; he was in my studio when my friend was photographing him. My friend said ‘I have one roll left Norm. You can shoot David if you want’. I did, and this was the resulting photograph.
