I recall the first time I met Herman. I saw him from afar as he was walking down Jervois Street in the Sheung Wan district of Hong Kong. As soon as he came up to me, he gave me a very warm and inviting bear hug. It took me off my surprise, because it’s so atypical of the people I know to do that on first time encounters. It must have been his Chicago-style attitude, or his parental upbringing. Nevertheless, it was very refreshing. This photograph that you see is his most endearing shot, although not my favorite. I’ll save that for later.
